The Freetown Polytechnic Kissy Campus, was established on the 28th of February 1964 by the then prime minister Sir Milton Margai.
As a trade centre, it was opened to train and recruit school dropouts in various livelihood trades like Carpentry and Joinery, Electrical
Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Civil and Building Engineering, Painting and Decorating, and Refrigeration and Air Conditioning.
At the inception, there was only a single faculty-the Faculty of Engineering.
In 1998, the Government of Sierra Leone thought it fit to upgrade the Government Trade Centre and other trade centres across the
country to an institute. Hence forth, the Government Trade Centre became The Government Technical Institute. As a result this
improvement in the status of the institute, some of the trades were improved upon and outstanding practical applications were
introduced, including on-the-job training programmes and the introduction of the commercial disciplines.
Today, Freetown Polytechnic Kissy Campus has two faculties: Faculty of Engineering and Faculty of Business.
The faculty of Engineering is divided into the following Departments:
• Electrical and Electronics Engineering ( having Renewable Energy Studies as a unit)
• Mechanical Maintenance Engineering ( having Automobile Engineering as a Unit)
• Building and Civil Engineering ( having the following units: i) Painting and Decorating ii) Carpentry and joinery iii) Refrigeration and Air Conditioning iv) Plumbing)
• Computer Studies (software and hardware).
Under the faculty of Business Studies, we have the following Departments:
Business Administration and Management; Procurement; Accounting and Finance; Banking and Finance; Marketing; Project Management; Human Resource Management.
The departments are headed by heads of department and the units are headed by directors.
Freetown Polytechnic Kissy Campus administers its courses at four (4) levels, and therefore has four categories of entrance requirements. The four levels are: Foundation,
Certificate, National Diploma and Higher National Diploma.
